The club’s all-time leading scorer, the 44-year-old, takes over after Graham Potter was fired on Sunday.

Lampard previously led the Blues from July 2019 until January 2021. He has been jobless since being fired at Everton in January.

In the Premier League, Chelsea is now in 11th place and will play Wolves on Saturday.

Despite spending more than £550 million on new players this season, they are 14 points behind fourth-placed Manchester United. But, they have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Champions League and will play Real Madrid in the first leg on Wednesday.

Former player Frank Lampard will take over while the co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali complete a “exhaustive process” to appoint a permanent manager, according to the co-owners.

We want to give the team and our supporters a steady and clear plan for the rest of the season, according to a statement.

We want to maximize our chances of success, and Frank possesses all the traits and abilities we require to lead us to victory.

During his last tenure as Chelsea’s manager, Lampard took over the team while they were subject to a transfer ban, but he managed to lead them to the FA Cup final in his first season and a fourth-place result.

He was fired by previous owner Roman Abramovich with the team ninth in the Premier League, having won just two of their previous eight games, after spending £200 million the following summer on seven significant signings, including current players Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz. He was unable to repeat the early promise.

Thomas Tuchel took his place, and four months later, he helped Chelsea win the Champions League final.

In January 2022, Lampard was appointed manager of Everton after being fired by Chelsea.

After nine losses in 12 Premier League games this season, he was fired eight days before his one-year anniversary in the position. Last season, he led them to safety from relegation.
