The existence of witches’ camps has been denounced by members of parliament (MPs), who have unanimously demanded the removal of all such settlements from the nation.
According to them, the closure would put an end to the cruel and brutal torture meted out to suspected witches, who are typically elderly and defenseless women.
The MP for Ketu South, Ms. Dzifa Abla Gomashie, rallied her colleagues to demand a halt to the practice, which has claimed the lives of several victims, by stating that it was an insult to the victims’ human rights and dignity to subject them to such “barbaric” activities.
The Ketu South MP stated in a statement on the House floor yesterday that state actors must enforce laws that safeguard older people’s rights and punish those who abuse them to serve as a deterrence to others. The statement was made in honor of this year’s International Day of Older People.
